ABSTRACT
Species of Periconia are cosmopolitan and occur as saprobes, endophytes and plant pathogens on a wide range of hosts. During a survey of endophytic fungi associated with Brosimum gaudichaudii (Moraceae) in the Brazilian Cerrado and Mimosa tenuiflora (Fabaceae) in the Caatinga, four isolates with morphological features typical of Periconia were obtained. Morphological observations and phylogenetic analyses based on ITS, LSU, and tef1-α sequence data showed that two isolates represent a new species, described here as Periconia cerradoensis, while two other isolates are identified as P. igniaria. Periconia cerradoensis is phylogenetically close to P. dicranopteridis, but differs by producing well-developed conidiophores and smaller conidia. The P. igniaria isolates represent a new endophytic record from M. tenuiflora in Brazil. Our findings expand current knowledge of Periconia in South America and highlight the importance of investigating endophytic fungi in underexplored Brazilian biomes.
